in the summer of '03 the szuplats purchased property
on 12 vacation lane.
found here will be details of putting a structure up
written mostly by erica and photographed a lot by ben,
however like most things in life there are exceptions....
for instance ben wrote that last useless sentence.
april 5 - 7 PAINT!!!!
ben inspects
the second floor paint job. difficult to see in this picture but
it's light lavender.
here is
the breakfast nook in a deep blue (obligatory apology for lack
of color reality in photos but these are as close as i could get
them and are for the most part accurate) ben got two good coats
on this and it is solid! ben also painted most of the upstairs
the light lavender.
our flooring
arrived monday and stach, paul, ben and erica formed a line and
passed the 100 boards from the porch into the kitchen.
erica
painted the downstairs bathroom its base color of some sort of
taupe. i think this means a light gray brown. she then tried a
colorwash technique over the taupe. this requires mixing your
top "wash" color with a transparent glaze. she is really
hoping this does not stay as pink as it looks mixed with the glaze,
half in the dark. while it looks nice up close
the wall
as a whole looks a little uneven and kind of blotchy. we will
have to wait for the sunrise to see how it looks. erica also now
knows why someone invented the roller. she is also glad she started
with the longest wall in the bathroom. all of about 11 x 8 feet
it took about two hours. (hopefully i can go faster on the second
time around!)
in other
news,
our propane tank was "installed"
on the 7th. the periscope part stays above ground. and
erica poses with the house numbers. hard to
tell but they are a brushed metal and erica made the sign look
a little worn.

don't
mess around with jim, i mean ben.

ben painted
like a madman today. it must have been the large coffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
he painted
all of the melloyello (many walls) as well as the green in some
other places such as the upstairs bathroom.
the stove
arrived on the site on friday and ben and clayton moved it off
the pickup. it's clearly still in the crate and should not be
set aflame at least until all the paperwork is out of its guts.
stach
worked long and diligently all day ! he finished running the gas
piping and installed the temporary toilet in the permanent bathroom.
ben successfully used the toilet and is hereby the first person
to use the indoor facilities. i know that jen fay will miss reading
about fidel castro and how hot he is in his beard (portapotty
graffitti) but it's time to send the bouse house on its merry
way. the bathroom colorwash can be seen here in most accurate
color (of course we don't know what your screen settings are...)
i completed the walls today. i was initially excited at my first
wall. it looked good in daylight. this was followed by some disappointment
at the second wall. sigh. i was able to let go of a little bit
of neuroticism (?) and touch it up and try to move on. on the
whole i am pleased with the result. with the old tub, sink and
ceiling fan etc i think the room will work well.
i did
some painting too.

ben started
sanding but cried for no more! i took over and finished the other
beam.
stach
stopped by in his fancy new truck and helped move the large appliances
out of the way of the flooring.

erica
rolled and stapled the rosin paper on the first floor while ben
did the rosin paper on the second floor and began cutting wood
and laying out the plan.

note that in the (rainy) photo of stach and his heavy duty vehicle
there is no bouse house!
april
17 (AKA claytons birthday!)

here are
some lights around the house. we got these and electrical outlets
and switches installed the other day.
these
are the lengths of PVC that will contain the electrical, cable,
and phone lines. ben and i glued them up the other day. the excavator
guys will dig a trench through our driveway to the house; they
have already backfilled our propane tank!
this is
all that remains above ground of the propane tank.

ben received
instructions and pointers from the crew at john parker. with some
help from pete we got some more wood and nails at the lumber yard.
and with help from stach in the afternoon we trimmed up the boards
ben had cut and fit together this week. the upstairs floorboards
are all nailed in!! we decided to do a different type of wood/flooring
in the bathroom due to the fact that its gonna see a lot of moisture.

here are
the floors after the first of three coats of polyurethane. the
last coat will be applied tonight.
these
are the ends of the electric, cable and phone PVC lines. the trench
was dug through our driveway yesterday and the pvc was buried.
the wires will run through the pvc and be connected to the house!
